semfire2.gif (3645 bytes)Read the diagram from left to right for strip sets. Read diagram from top to bottom for rows.

Colors: your choice of six fabrics.

In my example, the colors are as follows:

bulletColor 1: Yellow
bulletColor 2: Yellow Print
bulletColor 3: Black Print
bulletColor 4: Red
bulletColor 5: Blue
bulletColor 6: White

Cutting Directions for each block:

bulletCut one 3-1/2" wide strip (at least 7" long) each from colors 1 and 4.
bulletCut two 3-1/2" wide strips (at least 3" long) each from colors 2 and 5
bulletCut four 1-1/2" wide strips (at least 7" long) from color 2
bulletCut two 1-1/2" wide strips (at least 3" long) from color 3
bulletCut one 1-1/2" wide strip (at least 3" long) from color 5
bulletCut one 1-1/2" wide strip (at least 1-1/2" long) from color 6

(I use 1/4 yard of fabric and cut strips parallel to selvedge. For shorter strips, I use a crosswise tear. Strips are 9 or 12 inches (or longer) depending on the width and number of crosscut strips needed. After you cut a few, you can estimate so there won't be as much waste.)

Sewing Directions for each block:

Always use accurate 1/4 inch seams. Referring to diagram above,

  1. For rows 1 and 5, sew a strip set together as follows:

3" color 1, 1-1/2" color 2, 1-1/2" color 3, 1-1/2" color 2, 3" color 4

Crosscut this into two 3-1/2" strips  (rows 1 and 5 are the same strip - turn one strip over so that color 1 is in upper left and lower right).

  1. For rows 2 and 4, sew a strip set together as follows:

3" color 2, 1-1/2" color 3, 1-1/2" color 5, 1-1/2" color 3, 3" color 2

Crosscut this into two 1-1/2" strips (rows 2 and 4 are the same strip).

  1. For row 3, sew a strip set together as follows:

3" color 5, 1-1/2" color 2, 1-1/2" color 6, 1-1/2" color 2, 3" color 5

Crosscut (trim) to 1-1/2" (row 3 is one of a kind and can be turned either way depending on seams).

  1. Sew together as shown, pressing seams so they alternate when you sew them together. The corners must meet exactly when sewn.
